I have worked with wood for many years, both as a carpenter and as a contractor. Because of that, I look at furniture differently from many people. I do not only care about how something looks on the outside — I also pay attention to the structure, the type of wood used and whether something is actually built to last.

For a long time, I did not really enjoy making furniture for clients. Many people wanted the cheapest possible option, while still expecting furniture that would stay strong and beautiful for years. Over time, I realised I enjoy working most with people who truly value craftsmanship, durability and custom-made work.

One of the things I love most about my work today is creating furniture based on a client’s own ideas, inspiration photos or sketches. As both a contractor and a carpenter, I also understand furniture from a practical point of view: it should not only look beautiful, but also work well for daily life.

I decided to write this blog because I often see people buying furniture based only on appearance, without knowing much about the materials or construction inside. In this blog, I want to share some honest advice about buying furniture in Ghana and why quality makes such a big difference in the long run.

Sometimes Furniture in Ghana Looks Good Until You Use It

One thing I often see in Ghana is furniture that looks beautiful at first sight, but starts having problems after a short time of use. The finishing may look nice on the outside, but what really matters is the quality of the structure and the materials used inside.

A friend of mine once bought wooden lounge chairs that looked very well made. The visible wood was smooth and nicely finished, so at first everything seemed perfect. But after some time, parts of the chair kept breaking because the hidden structural wood inside was weak. The chair had to be repaired again and again.

Why Some Furniture in Ghana Breaks So Quickly

One thing many people do not realise is that furniture can look beautiful on the outside while the inside tells a completely different story.

I sometimes see sofas that look modern and expensive from the outside, while the inside is made with plywood or other low-quality materials that are not built for long-term use. It may even surprise people to know that some sofas and beds contain cardboard inside parts of the structure.

The same can happen with beds, chairs and cabinets. After some time, the furniture starts wobbling, cracking or breaking because the structure underneath was never strong enough.

That is why I always tell people: when buying furniture, do not only look at the design or the finishing. The real quality is often hidden underneath.

Good furniture starts with good materials, proper support and careful craftsmanship — even in the parts people normally never see.

Why Good Materials Matter in Furniture Making

When people think about furniture quality, they often only think about the wood. But good furniture is about much more than that. The strength of a piece also depends on the screws, bolts, foam, fabric, support structure and all the smaller materials that hold everything together.

That is one reason why quality furniture takes more time and often costs more to make. I spend a lot of time looking for the right materials for each project because I want the furniture to stay strong and comfortable for many years.

Sometimes the exact material I need is not easy to find locally. In those cases, I try to find creative solutions without lowering the quality of the final result. For example, I may build certain parts myself or work together with a welder to create stronger custom pieces for the structure.

For me, furniture is not only about appearance. I want the inside to be just as strong and well-made as the outside.

One Thing I Love About Custom Furniture

One of my favourite parts of this work is when clients come to me with an idea, a sketch or even just a photo they found online, and together we turn it into something real.

Sometimes people already know exactly what they want. Other times they only have a general idea or inspiration picture from Pinterest or social media. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to bring those ideas to life in a practical and durable way.

What I love about custom furniture is that every project is different. It is not mass production. Each piece is made for a specific person, space or purpose.

At the same time, honesty is very important to me. If I believe a design will not be strong enough, practical enough or suitable for daily use, I will say so openly. Sometimes small adjustments can make a piece much stronger and longer-lasting without losing the original idea.

For me, good craftsmanship is not only about making something beautiful — it is also about making something that truly works.

The Kind of Furniture I Make Most Often

One thing I enjoy about custom work is that almost every project is different. Over the years, I have made many types of furniture and woodwork for homes, guesthouses, restaurants and other spaces in Ghana.

Some clients ask for beds, wardrobes, dining tables or TV units. Others need bathroom furniture, kitchen shelving, wall units, desks or custom storage solutions. Sometimes I even make smaller pieces and finishing details like mirrors, benches or toilet roll holders.

Because every space and every client is different, I do not like limiting myself to only one style or type of furniture. I enjoy creating pieces that are practical, durable and made specifically for the space they are meant for.

In many cases, clients come to me because they cannot find exactly what they want in stores — whether it is the right size, the right style or the right quality. That is where custom furniture really makes a difference.

My Advice Before Buying Furniture in Ghana

My biggest advice is simple: do not only focus on the outside appearance or the cheapest price. Good furniture should not only look beautiful on the day you buy it — it should still be strong and comfortable years later.

Before buying furniture, try to ask questions about the materials being used, the structure inside and the overall durability of the piece. Sometimes furniture that seems cheaper at first can become more expensive over time because of repairs or replacements.

I also encourage people to give quality work the time it needs. Custom furniture is not something that should always be rushed. Good craftsmanship, proper materials and careful finishing all take time, especially when working on handmade projects.

For me, the goal is always to create furniture that people can truly enjoy for a long time. Furniture that fits the space, matches the client’s vision and is built with care from the inside out.
